Sanitation is a service: How waste accumulates and affects our environment

Cleanliness is not only a personal responsibility, but also a service to the community, country and the entire world. Unfortunately, many people fail to understand how their waste affects the environment. It is alarming to see how much garbage is piled up and how easily people throw it anywhere without proper disposal or cleaning measures. Sunday, October 1, 2023, in an effort to address this issue, the outgoing minister has announced the Swachhta Hi Seva program, requesting everyone to join and dedicate an hour at 10 am to clean the earth and contribute to a clean environment.

Hidden garbage dumps

Our country and the world in general are facing a serious waste crisis. The amount of waste generated by individuals and businesses is staggering. From household waste to industrial pollutants, these waste piles are increasing every day. Unfortunately, due to carelessness and lack of awareness, people throw their waste anywhere, further exacerbating the problem. The consequences of irresponsible waste disposal practices are dire, affecting not only the visual appeal of our surroundings but also the health and well-being of both humans and wildlife.

Joined Swachhta Hi Seva programme

To tackle the growing problem of waste, it is imperative that we as a society come together and take action. Swachhta Hi Seva Program is an opportunity for everyone to contribute towards a clean environment. By dedicating just one hour of our time at 10 am, we can actively participate in cleaning the earth and making a positive impact.

Our contribution to Arnala Beach,Nallasopara-Mumbai

The Eco Foundation team recently participated in the Jai Safai Abhiyan at Arnala Beach in Mumbai. The initiative aims to clean the beach and create awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal. By actively participating in the cleaning process, we not only removed the garbage from the beach but also educated people about the need for cleanliness. Our efforts have not only helped restore the beauty of Arnala Beach but also contributed to the overall cleanliness of our environment. Mr. Manuel Gawad, Ashok Naiya, Amit Poipkar, Mohan Thapa and Arvind Veeras participated in this work.

Importance of cleanliness

Cleanliness goes beyond just aesthetic appeal. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of individuals and the environment. Proper waste management ensures that harmful pollutants do not contaminate our air, water sources and soil. It helps prevent the spread of diseases and creates a safe and healthy living environment for everyone.

How waste affects the environment

Improper disposal of waste negatively affects the environment in many ways. When waste is left unattended or dumped into water bodies, it can pollute our oceans, rivers and lakes. This pollution not only affects the aquatic life but also damages the entire ecosystem. Moreover, when waste is burned, it releases harmful gases and toxins into the atmosphere, which contribute to air pollution and climate change. Additionally, the decomposition of organic waste in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that further accelerates global warming.

Taking responsibility for a clean future

To deal with the ever-increasing waste problem, individuals and communities need to take responsibility and adopt better waste management practices. Here are some steps we can take to ensure a clean future:

Mind your waste: Reduce the amount of waste you generate by practicing conscious consumption. Choose reusable items instead of disposable items.

Segregate your waste: Separate your waste into different categories, such as organic, recyclable and non-recyclable. This will make the recycling process more efficient and reduce the burden on landfills.

Recycle: Whenever possible, recycle your waste. Learn about and use your local recycling facilities.

Compost: Compost is a great way to use up organic waste and create nutrient-rich soil for gardening. Start composting at home and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Participate in cleanliness drives: Join community initiatives like the Cleanliness Hi Seva program and actively participate in cleaning public spaces. By doing so, you not only contribute to the cleanliness of your surroundings but also inspire others to follow suit.

Conclusion

Cleanliness is not just a service, but a responsibility to our planet and future generations. Garbage piles that are alarming are a clear indication that more needs to be done to address the issue. By participating in the Swachhta Hi Seva program and adopting responsible waste management practices, we can make a significant difference in creating a clean and healthy environment. Join the movement today and let's save our planet together!
